Management Skills for Technical Specialists

Course Outline

Description: Management Skills for Technical Specialists
Duration: Two days followed by a third follow-up day
Pre Requisites: None required
Course Objectives:

This practical and hands-on programme is designed especially for new and partly experienced technical managers. The learning includes tried and tested management techniques as well as innovative ideas from new management thinkers. Delegates will work on their own business issues as well as case studies, workshops and exercises. They will be given the skills and the chance to try things out in a relaxed and ‘safe’ environment.

By the end of the 2-day programme delegates will be able to:

1. Build a winning and committed team through vision and motivation
2. Manage and improve their own and the team’s performance
3. Focus the team’s behaviour towards the company’s goals and objectives
4. Learn about and develop their management and leadership style
5. Effectively manage individual and team projects, tasks and assignments
6. Get the most from the team through delegation, listening & giving feedback
7. Manage themselves, their time and priorities
8. Manage their further learning objectives and action planning

We recommend that Day 3 is undertaken after a three month period when the 2-day programme will be reviewed and evaluated. Delegates will also be able to review their own progress against the objectives they set for themselves.

In addition there will be introductory sessions on:

1. Creative approaches to problem-solving
2. Managing conflict, diversity and stress
3. Getting the most out of meetings

Audience:

Technical specialists are the life-blood of the business. They have the knowledge, skills and expertise to turn an idea into a state of the art product or to provide a highly skilled service to your customers. Unfortunately technical excellence does not necessarily go hand in hand with being an effective manager or team leader. Very often the more technically brilliant people are the less effective they are as managers. Each role requires a completely different skill set. Just a few examples:

Technical Specialist Effective Manager
Often prefers to work alone
Leads a high-performing team
Task/project oriented Is people oriented
Motivates self Motivates others
Methodical Is creative

The course is aimed at those who are moving from ‘doing it’ to managing other people who are ‘doing it
